They arrived at the police precinct out of breath. They had practically run the whole way, elbowing and pushing through the dense Subura crowds and sidewalk stalls, weaving in and out side streets, following the messenger and goading him to move faster. Not even the cold rain slowed them down. They were drenched when they arrived at the precinct. Straton was seated on a stool, grinning and holding a slab of veal under his right eye.

“It’s to check the swelling,” he said when he saw Severus and Vulso stop in the doorway and stare at him.

The doctor was packing his instrument case. “I sponged it with vinegar,” he explained matter of factly. “A nasty wound on his left cheek.”

“It burned like fire,” interjected Straton.

“…I took three stitches,” continued the doctor, “and applied a zinc ointment dressing. He’s all right, but he’ll be a little stiff for a few days. He’s bruised all over and may have some broken ribs. I bandaged his torso and tied it with the Hercules knot for luck.”

The doctor then left the room. Vulso walked in front of Straton, inspecting his face. “It’s lucky that he doesn’t make you wear a bandage of hyena skins,” he said, “like they do for dog bites.”

“I wasn’t bitten by a dog. I was trampled by a bull.”

“In the Subura district?” asked Severus incredulously.

“Let me tell you what happened.”
